[Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), 31 March 2013]

On 13 March, after nearly three decades of planning, engineering, and construction, representatives from the international astronomical community came together in a remote part of the Chilean Andes to welcome in a new era of discovery with the official inauguration of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The ceremony, which was viewed around the world, conveyed both the excitement of what ALMA will achieve as well as the universal appreciation for the diverse talents that have brought this amazing observatory to fruition. At the time of the Inauguration, fifty-five antennas from all three partners had been installed at the ALMA high site, 16,500 ft above sea level in the Chilean Andes. Image credit: C.
