About San Pedro

San Pedro de Atacama is the largest town nearest to the ALMA site. At the foothills of the dry Andes Mountains of Chile, this village of around 2000 people sits in an oasis created by the San Pedro and Vilama Rivers.

San Pedro's proud history as the birthplace of Chilean terraced farming goes back twelve thousand years. Chile's most famous archaeological museum is in San Pedro, and archaeological ruins and reconstructions dot the Atacama Desert around town.
