The National Radio Astronomy Observatory and Associated
Universities, Inc. invite submissions of radio astronomical
images to their Third Annual Radio Astronomy Image Contest.
This contest is designed to increase the number of visually
compelling, high-quality radio astronomy images available for
a wide range of educational and public outreach programs.
Images submitted to this contest will be included in the NRAO
Image Gallery for use by scientists, students, teachers, the
general public, the media, and EPO professionals.
The prizes are sponsored by Associated Universities, Inc (AUI) and will
consist of:
First Prize ($1000),
Second Prize ($500),
Third Prize ($250),
and up to nine
Honorable Mentions ($100 each).
The prizes will be awarded by a panel of scientists appointed by the NRAO which
will include one scientist that is not a member of the NRAO staff. The
membership of the panel will be made public at the time that the results of the
contest are announced. Those images judged by the panel to be the most
visually compelling will be featured in the 2008 NRAO calendar. Some of these
will be featured on NRAO posters.
Images submitted to this contest can display multi-wavelength emission that
need not be confined to the radio frequencies although each image should
contain and showcase radio emission observed with any of the NRAO telescopes.
Submission: Images should be submitted using the web-based tool in:
Image Contest Submission Tool
which will prompt for the required information. The actual images can be
submitted electronically via anonymous ftp, retrieved by NRAO if the submission
states the web location of the image that should be retrieved by NRAO, or by
regular mail using a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. If a CD or DVD is mailed, please
include a printed copy of the completed submission form to identify your disc
in addition to completing the submission electronically.
Minimum graphic quality: Images must be submitted as RGB or CMYK files with
a minimum size of 8.5” by 11” with a density of at least 300 dpi
(2550 x 3300 pixels). Larger images are most welcome although not required.
For example an 18” by 24” (5400 x 7200 pixels) format would make them
suitable for posters and large meeting displays. Acceptable formats are
PostScript (.ps, .eps), TIFF (.tif) or JPEG (.jpg) files.
Images must be submitted by individuals (hereafter "Author"), even if done in
collaboration with others. Submissions implicitly transfer copyright of the
images to NRAO/AUI for use of such images in various ways such as calendars,
posters, web pages, brochures, among others. Any commercial rights to the
image will remain with the submitting Author. Submission further implies that
the Author has obtained the necessary permissions to use the data that are
included in the image and is in a position to transfer copyright to NRAO/AUI.
Images do not need to be confined to research proposals in which the Author
was/is involved; images that use archival data that are in the public
domain can be submitted as well as images made with proprietary data if the
necessary permissions have been obtained from the corresponding astronomers.
There is no limit to the number of images that any Author can submit.
Images must be received by September 7, 2007. The decisions of the evaluating
panel are final and will be made public by October 15, 2007. Winners will be
notified directly by electronic mail and the results will be announced in the
NRAO newsletter and in the NRAO web pages.
NRAO staff are not eligible to participate in this contest except for NRAO
graduate and undergraduate student assistants and post-doctoral fellows.
Images previously published in the NRAO Image Gallery as well as those submitted
to previous editions of the NRAO/AUI Image Contest cannot be accepted.
Any tax liability for the prizes awarded through this contest will be the sole
responsibility of the winners.
