Education

The NRAO hosts and leads a wide range of exciting educational programs for teachers and students, providing valuable research experiences, professional development, and unique opportunities to explore our Universe.

Educational Programs for Teachers and Students

• Research Experience for Teachers: Provides summer research experiences for K-12 teachers who collaborate with a NRAO astronomer or engineer.
• Pulsar Search Collaboratory: Beginning in 2008, the Pulsar Search Collaboratory is an out-of this-world opportunity for West Virginia science teachers and their students to join an international team of astronomers in searching for new pulsars!
• West Virginia Governor’s School for Math & Science: 8th grade students from West Virginia learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in an intensive, 2-week summer program that engages them in scientific research.
• Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program: Undergraduate engineering, applied physics, or computer science students spend two or three semesters working in cooperation with their academic institution and the NRAO technical staff on a project at the forefront of technology.
• Summer Student Research Assistantships: Undergraduate and graduate students spend the summer doing research with an NRAO advisor.
• Graduate Student Internships: Short-term internships for graduate students pursuing research in radio astronomy or related fields with an NRAO advisor.
• Pre-Doctoral Research Program: Supports Ph.D. students in astronomy, engineering, or computer science to do thesis research supervised by a NRAO scientist or engineer.

Professional Development for Teachers

• Chautauqua Short Courses: Intensive 3-day workshops for undergraduate college faculty.
• Radio Astronomy for Teachers: A class offered through New Mexico Tech.
