Publication Support

When requested, NRAO will pay page charges as follows:

  • Papers reporting original observations utilizing any NRAO instrument(s): NRAO will pay 100% of the page charge share for authors at U.S. scientific or educational institutions.

  • Papers containing original analyses of archival data and/or based on a significant amount of previously unpublished archival data: NRAO will pay 100% of the page charge share for authors at U.S. scientific or educational institutions.

  • NRAO staff authored papers, either non-observational or utilizing non-NRAO instruments: page charge coverage for the NRAO author(s) is provided.

Journals ImageIn addition to the page charge support detailed above, NRAO may, in some cases, support page charges for papers containing original instrumental or theoretical analyses with direct implications for existing or planned NRAO facilities. Implications for the design of planned NRAO facilities, and the management, reduction, analysis, or interpretation of data from existing or planned NRAO facilities should be specified in the text. These requests will only be considered on a case-by-case basis.

For questions on apportionment of page charges or to discuss page charge support, please contact the Observatory Librarian or 434-296-0254. Special appeals will be refereed.

To receive page charge support, authors must comply with the following requirements:

Within the Paper:

1. The publication must include, as a footnote or acknowledgement, the following statement: "The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc."

2. Papers using archival data must specify, in the text, both the instrument and the original observation date; inclusion of the original program code is encouraged but not mandatory.

In the Page Charge Support request to the Observatory Librarian
:

3. Papers using an NRAO instrument must include the initiating Proposal Number(s). NRAO Logo

4. Include the astro-ph link or an electronic copy of the paper with publication information and the requested apportionment of page charges.

5. The journal's page charge request form must be e-mailed or Faxed (434.296.0278) with the manuscript (top) portion completed to the Observatory Librarian. The Observatory Librarian must sign and submit the journal's page charge form for the NRAO portion of the page charges. Page charge invoices received with no supporting paperwork will not be paid.

Scholar ImageNOTE: Non-resident Jansky Fellows should list National Radio Astronomy Observatory as their first institutional affiliation and their host institution as their second affiliation. They should also include a footnote stating "[YOUR NAME] is a Jansky Fellow of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory."

Preprints

All NRAO scientific and engineering staff, as well as visitors who have used an NRAO instrument or archival data, are expected to notify the Observatory Librarian about all papers submitted for publication, regardless of whether page support is requested.

Authors need to send, to the Observatory Librarian, either:

Form Image- the astro-ph link to their preprint, or
- an electronic copy of the preprint

These data are used for NRAO publication statistics as well as to compile the “Annual Bibliography of Staff and Visitor Publications” appended to NRAO's annual Statistical Observing Summary sent to the National Science Foundation and the “Publications” section of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Quarterly Report.

Reprint Orders

The minimum number of Reprints is ordered only for NRAO authors upon request. Reprint request information should be included on the journal's page charge form for invoicing purposes. Shipping address for reprints must be that of the NRAO author.
