Possible Co-op Opportunities in Green Bank for 2008/2009

1 - Electronics Engineer
The NRAO Green Bank Electronics Division develops and maintains the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope. We seek cooperative education students to work with our engineers to develop control systems and instrumentation for the telescope. Examples of projects underway include the Precision Telescope Control System, a project to enable the telescope to work at very high frequencies, as well as the CICADA project, a project using reconfigurable computing hardware to perform complex digital signal processing algorithms on telescope signals. Depending on the project selected, the students will gain experience in the fields of digital signal processing, reconfigurable computing, digital control systems, or other topics in electrical or computer engineering. Minimum requirements include a strong mathematical background, and experience with Matlab/Simulink, or Scilab/Scicos. A working knowledge of Linux operating systems is required.
Electronics Advisor : John Ford

2 - Software Developer/Engineer
The Green Bank Software Development Division is actively developing a unique dynamic scheduling system for the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The goal of the Dynamic Scheduling Project is to increase the scheduling efficiency of the GBT by allowing the telescope schedule to be optimally matched to both the current weather and the available instrumentation, while retaining observer control of each observation. The student will participate as part of the project team and have the opportunity to learn and work with both object-oriented programming and web development frameworks, with emphasis on Python and TurboGears respectively on a Linux platform, in a structured software engineering environment.
