Description:The winning cricket team, Socorro, November 1980. Front row: Peter Napier, Chris Salter, Dave Gibson, Gareth Hunt [captain]. Back row: Carl Bignell (holding Celeste and John Bignell), Bill Randolph, Rosalie Ewald, Tim Cornwell, Eva Jean Rigby, Brook Ekers, Eric Russell, Clair Rigby. The VLA team (pictured) beat the Socorro team. Players represented the USA, Jamaica, India, England, Holland, New Zealand, and Canada. Writing in the January 1981 Observer (v.22#1), Chris Salter said, "Passers by could be forgiven for imagining that mystical rites were being performed on the playing fields of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology on Saturday November 8th [1980]. The fact of the matter is that the slow perambulations and weird cavortings of fourteen white clad figures did not mark a frightening outbreak of alien worship but the progress of the first Socorro/VLA cricket match." Description:Alan Hale and Tom Bopp at the Enchanted Skies Star Party, Socorro, 1995. The two co-discoverers of Hale-Bopp, the “comet of the century,” were keynote speakers for that event, and it was in front of the crowd of attendees that they first met in person. They had been in contact by email and telephone for some time already, and considered themselves friends, and our star party was their first meeting. They wanted to meet dramatically for the first time in front of the crowd, and insisted that they be booked into separate hotels to avoid an accidental meeting. Hale spoke first, telling his discovery story, then said he wanted to introduce “my friend Tom Bopp.” Bopp stood up from the middle of the crowd and walked forward for their first handshake, to the applause of the crowd. The star party’s T-shirt for that year said, “Where Hale met Bopp." [show more]
