Description:Almost from the moment NRAO took possession of the original Edgemont Rd. building in Charlottesville in December 1965, it was too small, and personnel numbers were expected to nearly double over 1972-1976 as planning for the VLA ramped up. In 1972 (we think) two trailers were set at the very back of the parking lot behind the building, and there they stayed for almost 30 years. At various times they housed computer programmers, VLA project staff (before they moved to New Mexico), structural engineers, part time or visiting scientists, electronics staff, and Information Services (the early version of EPO), as well as being used at times for storage. As concrete plans were finally made in the early 2000s for the expansion of the building, the trailers needed to go. In this photo, taken on 31 January 2001, Sheila Marks, Billie Rodriguez, Anton Zensus, and Paul Vanden Bout are there to witness their imminent departure. [show more]

Description:In this photo, taken by Riccardo Giovanelli on the way from Calama to Ollague during a May 1994 trip to Chile to scout potential MMA sites, Angel Otarola (left) watches as Bob Brown (red and white jacket) uses a Sun radiometer to measure precipitable water vapor, while Paul Vanden Bout (navy shirt) and Hernan Quintana (navy jacket) survey the surroundings. The pipeline carries water from the mountains to Calama and then to Antofagasta. In the distance between the mountains there is a plume indicating industrial activity, probably from the Chuquicamata/Calama area, so the group is north from there along Route 21. Angel notes that the photo was taken on the way to Ollague, because "on the way back the radiometer got damaged crashing in the roof of the truck due to a bump in the road." Paul says, "The wretched meter, borrowed from Tucson, was not up to the rigors of our adventure. We tried changing the batteries with no effect. Gave it a few whacks and it died altogether." Thanks to Riccardo Giovanelli for the photo and to Angel Otarola and Paul Vanden Bout for caption information. [show more]

Description:Left to right: Bill Harris (NSF), Hugh Van Horn (NSF), and NRAO Director Paul Vanden Bout standing on level ground at the 16,500 foot MMA - later ALMA - site, with 20,000 foot mountains rising in the background. In a long article in the Fall 1997 issue of Point Source prompted by Congressional approval of the FY 1998 budget for NSF, which included design and development funding for the Millimeter Array, the late Bob Brown wrote, "Further partnership and cooperative involvement in the MMA is very likely. The NSF would like to see the MMA done as a partnership between their agency (through the NRAO) and another governmental agency or an international partner. Discussions, some quite far along, are being held with both the Japanese National Astronomical Observatory and the European Southern Observatory. These may lead to the MMA being done collaboratively and being expanded well beyond the scale of the project that we have been imagining heretofore. Such partnerships, should they come to pass, will have little effect on our near-term development plans but perhaps profound effects on the long-term evolution of the MMA project." [show more]

Description:In November 1994, the National Science Board approved a project development plan for the Millimeter Array and endorsed further planning. By the time of the formal NSB approval, however, NRAO had been looking for several years at potential sites in Arizona and New Mexico - and in Chile as well. In May 1994, a group explored areas around Ascotan, Ollague, Escondita, Salar de Imillac, and San Pedro de Atacama. In this photo, taken near Imillac by Riccardo Giovanelli, Hernan Quintana, Paul Vanden Bout, Bob Brown, and Angel Otalora are either pleased with what they see or pleased to be out of the truck. Seven years later, in November 2001, Congress appropriated initial construction funds for what had by then evolved from NRAO's MMA to the multi-national ALMA. [show more]
