Description:This is an early commentary on data storage at NRAO. This memo, affectionately known as "the tape memo," outlines procedures and protocols for the multiple users who will store files on a recently-purchased MTA-2 magnetic tape. Thanks to Barry Clark, who kindly provided the following additional information about the Charlottesville computer room in 1960: "The machine was a System 360 Model 50. The Mark I VLB correlator ran on this machine, at about eight or ten times slower than real time - not real swift. I hadn't remembered the front panel having so many lights. At any rate, it was the first front panel I encountered on which the lights were utterly meaningless except to a maintenance engineer. The console was not a teletype. It was a modified IBM Selectric typewriter. A great advance over the teletype. You could type as fast as you wanted - on the teletype, you had to adapt your rhythms to the machine." [show more]

Description:The back of a Station Rack for the ALMA correlator.  There are four types of racks in the correlator which consists of 40 racks total.  The Station Racks receive the data from the individual antennas and perform all the operations on it that can be done on a single-antenna basis.  From the Station Racks the signals are routed to the "Correlator Racks" which perform the actual correlation of antenna signals on an antenna-pair basis.  The blue cables that are so easily seen are the cables used to transport the data between the Station Racks and Correlator Racks. Description:Part of the "Tunable Filter Bank" card for the ALMA correlator.  It was designed, fabricated and tested by Alain Baudry's group in Bordeaux and supplied to the NRAO correlator group in Charlottesville to integrate into the ALMA correlator.  The large silver chips, labeled Altera Stratix II, form the heart of this board, a bank of digital filters that is used to set the bandwidth analyzed by the correlator.  These are not custom chips; they are commercially available field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) whose program is designed by the final user. Description:Framed display just outside the NTC Correlator Lab. It contains two wafers.  A wafer is a thin, round piece of silicon with an array of integrated circuits fabricated on it.  Each square is an integrated circuit.  The wafer on the top contains integrated circuits called "VLA1" from the VLA correlator, fabricated in 1977.  The wafer on the bottom contains integrated circuits called ALMA1 from the ALMA correlator, fabricated in 2003. The blank spaces in the bottom wafer are from chips that tested good and were packaged for installation on circuit board.  Part of what the display shows is the difference in size of the physical wafers. In the 26 years between the fabrication of the two wafers, the technology had progressed to the point where much larger wafers could be fabricated.  What you don't see in the comparison is the size of the features on the two wafers.  Not only is the ALMA1 chip bigger, it also contains much smaller features.
