Description:At the beginning of the 1990s, there were efforts to develop a new astronomical data processing package, referred to as AIPS++. The vision of AIPS++ was to improve research productivity of the radio astronomy community by unifying new astronomical algorithm and software ideas with state-of-the-art computing technology. It was undertaken as a cooperative venture, with multiple observatories around the world committing staff time to the project and sending people to Charlottesville for a year-plus to work jointly on the project. Description:Once each year the CIS systems administrators have a face-to-face meeting to discuss Common Computing Environment issues. The meetings rotate between sites and the March 2004 meeting was in Green Bank. Attendees had a high and low altitude tour of the GBT on a somewhat damp day. After returning from their vertiginous trip to the top, the red hat group contemplated engineering work in progress on the track. Description:Alan Hale and Tom Bopp at the Enchanted Skies Star Party, Socorro, 1995. The two co-discoverers of Hale-Bopp, the “comet of the century,” were keynote speakers for that event, and it was in front of the crowd of attendees that they first met in person. They had been in contact by email and telephone for some time already, and considered themselves friends, and our star party was their first meeting. They wanted to meet dramatically for the first time in front of the crowd, and insisted that they be booked into separate hotels to avoid an accidental meeting. Hale spoke first, telling his discovery story, then said he wanted to introduce “my friend Tom Bopp.” Bopp stood up from the middle of the crowd and walked forward for their first handshake, to the applause of the crowd.
