In 1609, Galileo Galilei pointed a telescope to the heavens for the first time, opening a new era in scientific discovery. Four hundred years later, in 2009, the astronomical community is celebrating its many contributions to global culture through the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009).
Initiated by the International Astronomical Union and endorsed by UNESCO and the United Nations, IYA2009 seeks to connect the world's citizens to the Universe and the their place in it. The NRAO joins the international community's IYA2009 celebration via a range of innovative programming that seeks to engage the public's imagination and answer their fundamental questions about our Universe.

Get educated about Quiet Skies Awareness for radio astronomy and Dark Skies Awareness for optical astronomy.
Some of the most fascinating objects, like black holes, and some of the most basic of processes, like how stars are born and how they die, are best studied by radio telescopes. We invite you to learn more with Cosmic Radio. Welcome to the radio universe!
In addition to these IYA2009 cornerstone projects the NRAO is contributing 12 episodes to the 365 Days of Astronomy Podcasts project as well as sponsoring 12 more.
