Representative Shelley Moore Capito paid a visit to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, W.Va., on Saturday, August 10, to tour the facility and learn first-hand about the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). NRAO Director Tony Beasley, Site Director Karen O'Neil, and Business Manager Michael Holstine helped make her visit both entertaining and informative by explaining NRAO's current investments in research, education, and technology development.

NRAO personnel also provided the Congresswoman with a personal tour of the facility, which included an introduction to radio astronomy, the history of the observatory at Green Bank, and the role of the GBT as a world leader in astronomical research. The Congresswoman was very interested in the future outlooks for research and funding, ensuring the GBT will remain a valued resource for the world's astronomical community.

"I thank and commend the staff and scientists at the NRAO observatory in Green Bank for their global leadership in research," said Capito. "The world-class Green Bank Telescope has extended our vision deeper into space and our understanding further back in time. I look forward to learning about the new discoveries made here that will help us unlock the mysteries of the cosmos."

Congresswoman Capito's visit also dovetailed with the graduation ceremony for the NRAO's Governor's School for Mathematics and Science, where she noted that "this is an absolutely beautiful facility. It's something that we need to make sure that we keep, that we enhance, and we have it grow."

The Congresswoman's West Virginia and Washington, D.C., staff worked with NRAO management to arrange her visit.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation, operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc.
