While On Site

Traveling between your lodging and the site

Please call Jessica Taylor at extension 2227 if you need to arrange for a shuttle to transport you from your lodging to the main site. Your room will have a landline phone and you'll only need to dial 2227 to reach Jessica.

Meals

Breakfast and lunch will be served in the cafeteria located on the main site daily. The cafeteria opens for breakfast daily at 7:30am. We will break for lunch daily at 12:30pm.

Dinners will be served in the cafeteria on Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 5:30pm. After dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday, we will move to the Erma Ora Byrd Green Bank Science Center for desserts and an evening discussion panel.

For dinner on Thursday evening, we.ve arranged a special treat. We will be having a barbeque at our site's recreation area complete with music from local talent. The Elk River Ramblers have a foundation in old-time and Celtic music, but also branch out into bluegrass, Klezmer, and contemporary pop.

Computing Access

We offer only wired Internet access on site and your lodging. If you need a Cat5 cable, some will be available on site. WiFi is not permitted on site. We also ask that you turn off the WiFi capability of any wireless devices while in Green Bank.

If you did not bring your own computer and need a guest account on our system, please call Jessica Taylor at extension 2227 and she will connect you with our computing group.

RFI Concerns

The Green Bank site of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the location of the workshop, is a unique resource for radio astronomy and has many operating telescopes. It is located in the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ), which provides protection from permanent, fixed, and licensed transmitter services. Its location, surrounded by national forest and mountainous terrain, also serves to protect observations. Therefore, there are some important points to keep in mind during your travel to and stay in Green Bank.

  • Please be aware that there is no cell phone reception within Green Bank nor within a 1 hour drive of Green Bank.
  • We offer only wired Internet access on site and where you'll be lodged. Please bring your own Cat5 cable. WiFi is not permitted on site. We also ask that you turn off the WiFi capability of any wireless devices while on site.
  • Digital cameras are not permitted near the telescopes.
